Tahu nui a rangi

The Māori name for Aurora.

In Te reo Māori, the term "Tahu-nui-a-rangi" emphasises a universal belonging and spiritual connection to the aurora as a reflection of ancestors' campfires. Each episode in Aurora Chasers will be named after the indigenous name given to lady Aurora in the region it is set.

Aurora Chasers is a six-part documentary series following the modern-day hunters who live for a glimpse of the aurora — a fleeting, unpredictable wonder that has captivated humankind for millennia.

Each episode tracks a new set of chasers in a different aurora hotspot, from the subantarctic skies of New Zealand and Tasmania to the Arctic reaches of Norway, Finland, Northern Canada, and Alaska. These aren't just photographers — they are storm chasers of the solar kind, driven by science, spirit, and sheer obsession.

Blending high-adrenaline adventure with cultural depth, the series weaves together cutting-edge solar science, Indigenous and ancient legends, and the raw, personal stories of those who shape their lives around the pursuit.

Through isolation, extreme weather, and sleepless nights under the stars, they chase a natural phenomenon that is equal parts scientific marvel and spiritual mystery.

Whatever you do, don’t whistle at the Aurora.

In Northwestern Canada indigenous Cree believed that if you whistled at the Aurora, the lights would swoop down, cut off your head and play football with it
